No. 22 Matt Kazimir, Joe Franzese and Kyle Mosher each snagged two wins during the first day of the Midlands Championships.
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Three Lions, sophomores No. 22 Matt Kazimir (141 pounds) and Joe Franzese (184 pounds), along with first-year Kyle Mosher (157 pounds), collected a pair of wins to highlight day one for Columbia Wrestling (0-1) at the highly competitive 57th Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern at the Sears Centre on Sunday, Dec. 29.
Despite the pair of wins for the three Lions, Columbia did not advance any student-athletes to the second day of the Midlands, with all 10 Lions who competed all falling out of contention for a top seven place.
DOUBLING UP: Kazimir's day started with a 2-1 decision win over Northern Illinois' Anthony Gibson, before falling in an 8-2 decision against No. 20 Dylan Duncan (Illinois) to move into the consolation bracket. The first consolation match went Kazimir's way, with the Lion sophomore taking down Princeton's Marshall Keller with a 3-2 decision to advance in the bracket, but Kazimir would lose a real battle in sudden victory, falling in the next round to Doug Zapf (Penn) SV-1 3-1 to end Kazimir's tournament.
At 157 pounds, Mosher battled through a first-round loss, a 5-2 closely contested decision against Purdue's No. 7 Kendall Coleman, bouncing back with a 1-0 decision in the next match against teammate junior Riley Jacops to stay alive in the consolation bracket. Mosher next got a win with a victory by fall at 3:00 over Coleman Brainard (SIUE), but in the next consolation match, Mosher's day came to an end falling in what was his second closely contested match against a ranked opponent on the day, a 3-2 decision against No. 20 Justin McCoy (Virginia).
Franzese, much like Mosher, fell in the first round to a ranked opponent, falling via pin at 1:55 against No. 15 Tanner Harvey (American) to move directly to the consolation bracket, but the Lion sophomore would outscore Virginia's Michael Battista in a 14-11 decision marathon victory to advance in the bracket. Next, Franzese knocked off Penn's Jesse Quatse with a 6-4 decision to stay alive in the tournament, but Franzese's day would wrap up in his following match as he fell to Menlo's Anthony Orozco by a 6-0 decision.
UP NEXT: The Lions begin the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association dual meet portion of their schedule as, on Jan. 10, Columbia heads upstate to face Binghamton, before making the short drive to take on EIWA and Ivy League foe No. 18 Cornell on Jan. 11 in the first two meets of 2020.
