98th annual Varsity C Celebration to take place Tuesday, May 7 at Roone Arledge Auditorium in Lerner Hall at 5 p.m. ET; Male and female finalists announced for Columbia’s most prestigious athletic awards: Maniatty, Campbell Performer of the Year and Rookie of the Year.
Modeled after the popular ESPYs awards show, the Varsity C Celebration serves as the final gathering event for all of Columbia's 800-plus student-athletes with the purpose of showcasing achievements and milestones. The highest honors will be bestowed on several of the Lions' brightest stars. In addition to the presentation of several major awards, the evening will feature videos and highlights celebrating major moments and achievements accomplished this year. Individual sports program award winners will also be recognized during the event and a full dinner will be served to the attendees at the conclusion of the event.
The Celebration is FREE for all student-athletes, coaches and Athletics staff. For parents, campus partners, alumni, and others, tickets can be purchased for $50 and can be acquired by clicking here!
The Connie S. Maniatty Award is given annually to the top senior male and female student-athletes in recognition for their outstanding Columbia careers.
Now in its fourth year, the William V. Campbell Athlete of the Year will be presented to one male and one female student-athlete who demonstrates superior athletic ability during the 2018-19 academic year. The award is named after William V. Campbell '62CC '64TC, a former Columbia student-athlete, football coach and Chairman of the Columbia University Board of Trustees who went on to a successful business career in the Silicon Valley as Chairman of the Board for Intuit Inc., Vice President of Marketing and board director for Apple Inc. and CEO for Claris, Intuit and GO Corporation.
Two student-athletes will also be presented with Rookie of the Year Awards for top student-athletes in their first-year with Columbia Athletics.
In addition to those six awards, Columbia also announces winners for the Paul E. Fernandes Community Service Award, which is presented to the varsity sports program which achieves the most significant contributions and notable service to the University and local communities during each academic year, the Lions Cup, which honors the most outstanding team on the basis of points in several categories including academic, athletic, personal and social responsibility, the Karen Blank Award, which honors the top senior female student-athlete enrolled at Barnard College and who exemplifies the qualities of academic success, athletic achievement, strong sporting behavior & commitment to community, and Columbia Athletics' Leader of the Year.
Columbia will also present senior watch awards to senior student-athletes earning the highest cumulative grade point averages with at least two varsity letters: the Marion R. Philips Watch and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Watch.
Two alumni members will also be featured at the event as Athletics Alumni Award recipients: former men's tennis player Rajeev Emany '05CC, and former women's diver Tina Steck '80BC.
SNY's Sal Licata will serve as Master of Ceremonies. A radio and television personality for both WFAN Radio and SNY, Licata has served as a color commentator for a variety of Columbia's televised athletic events. Previously, he served as Master of Ceremonies for Columbia's 2018 Hall of Fame Banquet in October.
Planning for this year's celebration was coordinated in conjunction with a Student-Athlete Planning Committee consisting of first-year golfer Alexis Florio, sophomore track and field athlete Grace Campbell, junior rower Nina Tang, sophomore tennis player Paulina Ferrari, junior volleyball player Rose Compton and junior lightweight rower Jorge Gonzalez. The group was charged to plan and add new excitement to this year's Celebration.
