First-Year Kyle Mosher collected a pin at 157 pounds as Columbia Wrestling fell in Ithaca, New York.

ITHACA, N.Y. – In the 2019-20 Ivy League opener, Columbia Wrestling (1-2, 1-0 EIWA/0-1 IVY) dropped its match at No. 19 Cornell (5-4, 1-1 EIWA/1-0 IVY), 27-12, on a Saturday night dual meet at the Friedman Wrestling Center in Ithaca, New York.

The Lions did snag two wins, coming from first-year Kyle Mosher (157) and sophomore Sam Wustefeld (197), with Mosher recording a late pin and Wustefeld collecting a win due to medical forfeit. The loss at Cornell means that the Lions split their dual meet opening weekend, having taken a 24-15 victory at Binghamton on Friday, Nov. 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Columbia's first win of the match came late in the third period between Mosher and Adam Santoro, with Mosher recording the pin at 6:42. The match was a true battle with both Mosher and Santoro battling hard, and late in the third period Santoro held a 5-4 lead, but that's when Mosher struck. Working on bottom, he turned the tables and, despite being on his back, had top control and with a strong arch of the back recorded the pin, his fourth of the season, to lock up six points for Columbia.

At 197, Wustefeld faced off with No. 6 Ben Darmstadt, but the match would not make it out of the first period. Darmstadt, who had a lead midway through the opening period, injured his rib in what was a physical rotation that saw both Wustefeld and Darmstadt reverse each other with Darmstadt landing hard on his side. The Cornell 197-pounder attempted to keep going, but after two more injury stoppages, took the medical forfeit to give Wustefeld the win and the Lions another six points.

Cornell's wins, which would add up to the 27 points they collected on the night, started at 125 pounds when Dom JaJoie beat sophomore No. 29 Joe Manchio in a 8-5 decision. At 133 pounds, first-year Trent Svingala dropped his match in an 8-2 decision to No. 5 Chas Tucker, sophomore No. 21 Matt Kazimir, at 141 pounds, dropped his match to Noah Baughman in a battle that eneded with a 3-1 decision and first-year Andrew Garr lost in a major decision, 8-0, to Hunter Richard, giving Cornell a 13-0 lead before the Lions would score points on Mosher's pin at 157 pounds.

After Mosher's bout and win at 157 pounds, Cornell's next win came with a 3-2 decision in a close battle at 165 pounds with Andrew Merola collecting the decision over junior Riley Jacops, the Big Red followed that up with a 4-0 decision in another close battle at 174 pounds with first-year Lennox Wolak battling Milik Dawkins from start to finish.

Cornell, holding a 19-6 advantage, next got points at 184 pounds when No. 28 Jonathan Loew recorded a 18-2 technical fall over first-year Michael Baker, and after Wustefeld's medical forfeit win at 197 pounds, sophomore Danny Conley lost a 7-0 decision at 285 pounds to No. 31 Brendan Furman to wrap up the match.
