Lions Announce 2020 Schedule
1/22/2020 12:57:00 PM | Lightweight Rowing
Columbia Lightweight Rowing will host four home races at Overpeck Park in a busy 2020 season.
NEW YORK – As the weather begins to warm up, so does the water and with that in mind Columbia Lightweight Rowing head coach Nich Lee Parker has announced the 2020 schedule for the Lions, which is highlighted by four races taking place at Overpeck Park in Leonia, New Jersey, and the 2020 season begins on Saturday, Mar. 14 at Lake Lure, North Carolina.
"Our spring schedule not only retains the storied history behind the traditional cup races, but also makes room for a double-header with Cornell, Dartmouth and Georgetown in April," said Parker. "Everyone is going to get the benefit of practicing two all our efforts in a single day before we head to the EARC Eastern Sprints in May."
Columbia's season opens up, for the second straight season, at Lake Lure, where the Lions will face Ohio State on Mar. 14 to open the year, before taking on North Carolina on Mar. 21. The Lions faced both Ohio State and North Carolina at Lake Lure to open the 2019 season, and the only squad not joining the three programs that was there last season is Alabama.
The Lions then open up Overpeck Park in Leonia, New Jersey by hosting Navy in the WIT Cup on Apr. 4. It is the sixth straight season that the Lions will face Navy in the WIT Cup and over the previous five, Columbia has taken the cup four out of five, including winning last season's cup.
Following the WIT Cup, Columbia heads north to Cambridge, Massachusetts for the Wales-Kirrane Cup, where the Lions will take on Georgetown and hosting Harvard on Apr. 5. This will be the third straight season that the Wales-Kirrane Cup has been competed, and the Columbia Varsity Eight boat has finished second in the previous two races.
For the remainder of the season, Columbia will face only Ivy League programs, starting with the historic Dodge Cup, which has been competed between Columbia, Yale and Penn every year since 1980, with the first race coming in 1954. This year's race will take place in New Haven, Connecticut, with Yale hosting and the Lions enter the competition having won the previous two cups going back to 2018 and they will look for their eighth Dodge Cup win all-time.
The final three cup competitions will take place at Overpeck Park, and the final stretch of the season begins with a doubleheader against Cornell (Geiger Cup) and Dartmouth (Subin Cup) on Apr. 25. The Geiger Cup, which is the second oldest cup Columbia competes for behind only the Dodge Cup, has been competed every season since 1956, and Columbia comes into the race with Cornell having won the Cup last back in 2018 and they will look to retake the cup from Cornell.
Columbia's matchup with Dartmouth, which is a competition for the Subin Cup, has some history of its own, going back to 1985, and the Lions have been dominate over Dartmouth for the past seven straight seasons, having won the last seven cups and the calender has to be turned back to 2012 to find the last time the Lions did not take home the Subin Cup. The Lions have won 19 Subin Cups in their history, and this season's race will be a hunt for number 20.
Finally, Columbia will wrap up its cup competitions with a relatively newer cup competition as on May 2, the Lions will host Princeton in the Campbell Cup for the fourth year of the Campbell Cup's history. In the first three meetings for the Campbell Cup, Columbia's lone win came when the V8 boat finished first in 2018, and this year's competition will be the second time it has been hosted at Overpeck Park, with the first time happening in 2018.
With the regular season behind them, Columbia turns its attention to the EARC Eastern Sprints and a shot at the IRA National Championships. The EARC Sprints will take place on May 17 in Worcester, Massachusetts, and the Lions come in having finished fifth in 2019, but they did win the Eastern Sprints back in 2018 and they will look for a repeat performance.
A solid race at the EARC Sprints will mean a trip to the IRA National Championships for the 10th straight season, and those are set to run from May 29-31 in Princeton, New Jersey. Columbia's V8 finished fourth in 2019, but the V8 did take home the national title in 2018 and this season the Lions will look to return to the top of rowing in the country.
