Aufrichtig earns the honor for the second consecutive season; eight Columbia fencers earn All-Ivy League honors.
PRINCETON, N.J.—Columbia Head Fencing Coach Michael Aufrichtig was named the Ivy League Women's Fencing Coach of the Year, the Ivy League office announced on Thursday morning.
Aufrichtig earns the honor three days after guiding the Lions to their third straight outright Ivy League women's fencing title. He also claims the honor for the second consecutive season as he was named Ivy League Women's Fencing Coach of the Year after guiding the Lions to outright Ivy League titles in both men's and women's.
The Ivy League Fencing Coach honors are selected by and voted upon by league head coaches.
In addition to Aufrichtig's honor, the Ivy League announced its All-Ivy League fencers as eight Columbia Lions earned respective honors. Earning First Team All-Ivy League honors included Teddy Lombardo (men's epee), Cedric Mecke (men's epee), Maria Chart (women's saber), and Ester Schreiber (women's foil). Taking home Second Team All-Ivy League honors were Josef Cohen (men's saber), Sidarth Kumbla (men's foil), Daniella Timofeyev (women's saber), Natalie Minarik (women's foil).
Since Aufrichtig joined the program as head coach in 2011, Columbia Fencing has been a dominant force nationally and in Ivy League competition. During his tenure, Columbia men's fencing has won six of the last seven Ivy League Championship titles, while the women have found themselves on top of the podium in five of the last six seasons, including three straight outright titles. In addition to the Lions' success in Ivy League play, Columbia has also claimed three of the last five national titles under Aufrichtig, including back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2015 and 2016, and then again last year in 2019.
The Lions enter the 2020 NCAA Championships as the defending national champion.
