Lions Advance At The CSA Nationals; Take Down Brown, 8-1

Columbia Men's Squash advanced to the semifinals of the Hoehn Cup with an 8-1 first-round victory over Brown.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. โ In the opening match of the Hoehn Cup at the College Squash Association National Championships, Columbia Men's Squash (8-8, 4-3 IVY) put together a strong performance, taking down Brown (6-9, 0-7 IVY), 8-1, needing three five-set wins, in the first round to advance to the Hoehn Cup Semifinals on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Murr Center.

Columbia will now face Western Ontario, who beat George Washington, 7-2, in its first-round matchup.ย Wins for Columbia came from James Wyatt (No. 1); Callan Hall (No. 2); Robin Mann (No. 3); Krish Kapur (No. 4); Chaitanya Shah (No. 5); Justin Ghaeli (No. 6); Rahul Sehrawat (No. 7) and Hugh Camiener (No. 9) powered the Lions to a solid win to open the Hoehn Cup.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Over Columbia's top three slots, the Lions did not drop a set, as Wyatt won, 11-5, 11-8, 11-5, over Maximo Moyer, Hall took down Grant Sterman, 11-3, 11-5, 11-9 and Mann cruised past Andrew Wei, 11-6, 11-4, 11-8, as Columbia controlled the top of the lineup.ย At No. 9, Camiener bounced back from a second-set loss, to win 11-8, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, over Raghav Pemmireddy, in Columbia's only match that went four sets.

But the Lions did need to show up at No. 4; No. 6 and No. 7 where five sets would be needed to decide those matches.ย At No. 4, Kapur would bounce back from a first-set loss, to take the next two sets, and despite dropping the fourth set to Declan McCarthy, Kapur would take the final set to win the match, 7-11, 11-3, 11-1, 9-11, 11-7.

Sehrawat (No. 7), had a back-and-forth battle with Nicholas Pitaro, but wins in the final two sets would lock up the five-set victory for Sehrwat, winning 2-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-6, 11-5.ย And at No. 6, Ghaeli took the opening two sets, before dropping the next two, but he would bounce back to take the final set, beating Harrison Boyer, 11-5, 11-6, 7-11, 5-11, 11-4, to lock up another five-set win for Columbia.
