Columbia Student-Athletes Earn On-Campus Awards

Columbia University recognizes 24 student-athletes with various on-campus awards, honorary distinctions, academic, and community service awards and prizes.
NEW YORK— A total of 24 Columbia student-athletes earned a variety of Columbia University on-campus awards during 2020 Commencement Week.
"Every year our student-athletes truly distinguish themselves on the Columbia University campus by earning many of the university's highest accolades and honors," Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Peter Pilling said. "Once again, Columbia Athletics is proud of their outstanding accomplishments."
Earning multiple on-campus honors were field hockey's Maaike Blindenbach, women's basketball's Janiya Clemmons, women's track and field's Maryam Hassan, women's soccer's Amalya Johnson, men's swimming's Shinya Kondo, field hockey's Kelly McCarthy, lacrosse's Abby Roberts, softball's Genny Soltesz, softball's Amber Swinarski, and women's soccer's Maddie Temares.
Hassan earned a Columbia Athletics' high four awards as she was presented with the Edward C. Brainard Memorial Prize and the King's Crown Leadership and Excellence Indelible Mark award and was named a Senior Marshal and Multicultural Graduation Cords member.
The Columbia Athletics Class of 2020 was comprised of 158 student-athletes. Columbia University and Columbia Athletics celebrated the Commencement of its 266th academic year Wednesday morning with its first-ever virtual graduation.
Columbia Athletics announced that it will host a virtual end-of-year athletics banquet, the Virtual C Celebration, on Tuesday, May 26, to honor the achievements of its student-athletes from the 2019-20 academic year. Due to circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and the need for social distancing, this year's event takes the place of the annual Varsity C Celebration. The event will be streamed live on the Columbia Athletics YouTube channel. It is set to go live on May 26 at 8 p.m. ET. Access to the live-streaming celebration is open to the general public. A link to watch will become available closer to the event date.

Senior marshals are outstanding students of the senior class in good academic standing who have a record of contributing to their class - their school and/or their community and represent what it means to be a Columbian. Senior marshal honorees have been nominated to represent their class by a member of the Columbia University community.
