Westphal Makes Finals as Lions Compete at ITA Regionals

Philadelphia, PA -- Men's Tennis rookie Max Westphal headlined Columbia's final fall tournament appearance at the ITA Northeast Regionals, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania from Oct. 14-19.
The U.S. Open Boys Doubles champion defeated five opponents in straight sets to advance to the Northeast Regional Finals. Ivy League rival Alafia Ayeni of Cornell narrowly grabbed the second set 7-6 after Westphal Ayeni eventually came away with the victory in a 6-3 third set following three hours of competition.
Westphal's - the first Lion first-year to reach the finals of the Regionals since 2-time Ivy League Player of the Year Victor Pham '19 in 2015 earned a place at the ITA Fall Championships, scheduled for November 4-7 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, CA. Two representatives from each of the 12 regions in the country automatically qualify for the championships while an additional 8 selections, including At-Large and Wild Card bids,amount to a 32-player draw.
Alex Kotzen and Ben Gollin reached the round of 16 of Singles in the Regionals while teammates Ishaan Ravichander, Hugo Hashimoto, Austen Huang, and Henry Ruger reached the round of 32.
