The Lions women won all three duals, while the men finished 2-1 on the night
NEW YORK — The Columbia women's fencing team put on a show, going a perfect 3-0 in a dominant performance on its home strips Friday night. The Lions' topped Stevens by a count of 25-2, defeated NJIT 22-5 and closed things out with a 23-4 triumph over Johns Hopkins. The men's squad bounced back with a pair of victories after dropping the opening round against Stevens.
"Our women were unbelievable tonight," said head coach Michael Aufrichtig. "We had some first-years make their collegiate debuts and it was great to fence our entire team. The women were communicating really well with each other and the record showed that. The men fought hard. All three teams are stronger since last year. We were in position to win against Stevens, but our epee team came up short. Hopefully, we can take those lessons and grow from them and be stronger when the second part of the season comes."
The women made quick work of Stevens in the opening bout. The trio Nika Filippov, Pilar Maldonado and Audrey Chu closed things out in epee in style, earning a 9-0 sweep.
The men held a 10-8 advantage going into epee before the Ducks rallied in epee, 7-2, earn a 15-12 win. However, the Lions responded against the Highlanders with a 21-6 decision. Nick Harvey and Colby Harley each went 3-0 on sabre's way to an 8-1 win and foil was just as impressive, taking the first four bouts on its way to match sabre.
Against NJIT, it was women's foil's turn to shutout an opponent. Zander Rhodes, Rachel Zhang and Alexandra Jing teamed up to each go 3-0 to highlight the middle matchup of the event.
Women's foil shined again in the finale, with Delphine DeVore, Evelyn Cheng and Rhodes making it a perfect 27-0 on the night against Johns Hopkins. The men had enough scoring to clinch the finale against Hopkins, despite falling in epee to wrap the meet up.
The Lions will return to action in 2023 when it competes at the Penn State Invitational on January 15.
