COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — For the second consecutive year, Columbia fencing went a combined 15-0 at the Western Invitational, hosted by Air Force. The Lions fenced five opponents Saturday and finished with three rounds Sunday before heading back to New York.
"I'm proud of the way we fenced together as a team because everyone was coming for us this weekend," head coach Michael Aufrichtig stated. "We fought back from many situations where we were down, winning multiple one-touch matches. Everyone contributed to our undefeated weekend with smart fencing, positive energy and incredible teamwork."
On Saturday, the men and women posted nearly identical results. Columbia bested the likes of Incarnate Word, San Diego, Air Force, Stanford and Ohio State by combined scores of 183-72. Both squads started Sunday with convincing wins over North Carolina before the women dispatched Northwestern, 19-8. In the final round, the men and women both topped NJIT by 24-3 counts.
The Lions have next weekend off before hosting Stevens Tech., NJIT and Johns Hopkins in the Columbia Invitational on Friday, November 18. The meet is slated to begin at 5 p.m. in the Blue Gym in the Dodge Physical Fitness Center.
