Record Three Lions Named First Team All-Ivy League

Farida Mohamed tabbed Ivy League Rookie of the Year; McVeigh Takes Academic All-Ivy Honors

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Ivy League announced its postseason honors and awards for women's squash on Wednesday. Columbia's Habiba Mohamed, Simmi Chan and Farida Mohamed were all named First Team All-Ivy League, while Farida Mohamed also took home Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors.

This marks the first time the Columbia women's squash program has put multiple student-athletes on the All-Ivy First Team. Led by their three selections, the Lions posted a record of 7-4 this season and are ranked No. 5 in the College Squash Association National Poll. Columbia ended the Ivy season with a 4-2 mark against league competition, which is its best record in program history.

Farida Mohamed, a sophomore playing in her first collegiate season, earned First Team All-Ivy and Rookie of the Year honors after posting a dual record of 8-1 this season. Mohamed was consistently in the Lions' top match, going 6-1 from the No. 1 and 2-0 at the No. 2 position. She defeated No. 1 players from Virginia, Trinity, Yale, Dartmouth, Penn and Princeton. Five of her six wins from the No. 1 position came in three games.

Senior Habiba Mohamed becomes just the second Lion in program history to be named First Team All-Ivy League in multiple seasons (2020). Mohamed was a perfect 9-0 in dual matches, going 8-0 from the No. 3 and 1-0 in the top match. In doing so, Mohamed improved her career record to 31-9 (.775), which is the best winning percentage in Columbia women's squash history. The two-time All-American is also just one win behind Maddie O'Connor (2015-19) for the most dual wins in program history (33).

First-year Simmi Chan made it a trio of Lions on the All-Ivy First Team. The impressive rookie went 8-1 on the season, going 1-1 in the No. 1 position and a perfect 7-0 in No. 2 matches. Chan bested the No. 1 player from Drexel (Dec. 3) and swept No. 2 players from Virginia (Nov. 14), Yale (Jan. 16), Penn (Jan. 28) and Princeton (Jan. 30). Chan heads to CSA Nationals in two weeks on a six-match winning streak.

Additionally, junior Ellie McVeigh was Columbia's representative on the Academic All-Ivy League Team. The award recognizes one student-athlete from each of the league's eight women's squash programs for their success on the court combined with their academic accomplishments. McVeigh carries a 3.82 GPA as a neuroscience and behavior major at Columbia College. On the court, she earned five victories this season, including wins in No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 matches.

No. 5 Columbia will compete at CSA Team Nationals next weekend, Feb. 25-27, which will be hosted by Harvard.
