National foil champion Ashton Daniel is named the USFCA Men’s Foil Athlete of the Year.
NEW YORK—Junior national foil champion Ashton Daniel was named the United States Fencing Coaches Association Men's Foil Athlete of the Year, the organization announced.
On the year, Daniel won the 2021-22 NCAA men's foil championship by defeating teammate Sidarth Kumbla, 15-14, in an all-Columbia men's foil final. It was the first time in 32 years that two Lions squared off in a national championship bout when David Mandell defeated Peter Siemens in the 1990 men's sabre final.
Daniel became the 39th national champion in Columbia Fencing history, the school's first foil champion since 2001, and 11th all-time men's foil champion in school history.
A First Team All-America honoree as a top-4 finisher, he went 16-7 overall at the NCAA Championships. He finished in fifth place at the NCAA Northeast Regional with a 17-6 overall record, won the Ivy League men's foil individual championship with a 10-2 record and earned First Team All-Ivy League honoree. He was also named Columbia's men's Academic All-Ivy League selection, went 10-2 in Ivy League Round Robins, and compiled 34-12 overall dual match record.
Daniel was also honored with the team's Kestler Award, given to the varsity fencer who inspires the team to superior performance and leads the way to victory. He was also a finalist for Columbia's William V. Campbell Performer of the Year award.
