2015 Columbia graduate takes tournament’s No. 13 seed to five sets
LONDON — Columbia men's tennis alumnus Max Schnur '15CC saw his run in the Gentlemen's Doubles draw at Wimbledon come to an end on Saturday afternoon. Schnur and doubles partner Robert Galloway rallied from two sets down to force a fifth set, but ultimately fell to 13th-seeded Santiago Gonzalez (MEX) and Andres Molteni (ARG) in the second round, 6-7 (6), 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 4-6.
This was Schnur's second Wimbledon (2017) and first time making it past the first round. On Thursday, after learning they had made their way into the main draw as alternates, Schnur and Galloway defeated Tallon Griekspoor (NED) and Oscar Otte (GER) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
In 2017, Schnur became the first Lion since Eric Fromm '86CC to reach the world's oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament. His victory on Thursday was the first by a Lion at Wimbledon since Fromm in 1983.
A four-year member and two-time captain of the Lions, Schnur contributed to two Ivy League titles and claimed the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship Doubles crown. While competing in Morningside Heights, Schnur was named to three First Team All-Ivy teams (2012-2014) highlighted by a unanimous selection as a rookie (2012).
