
Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Allen Morris Invitational

The Lions won 27 of 37 total matches in the three-day event to start the 2023 spring slate
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 22 Columbia men's tennis team had an impressive showing to open the 2023 spring slate at the Allen Morris Invitational as the Lions won 27 of 37 combined singles and doubles matches during the three-day event.
Day 1 – Jan. 14
The Lions won eight of nine singles matches against Boise State on Saturday. Hugo Hashimoto, Roko Horvat, Alex Kotzen, Sachin Palta, Ishaan Ravichander, Henry Ruger, Theo Winegar, and Michael Zheng were all victorious. Max Westphal dropped the only singles match in a close 7-6(6), 3-6, 7-5 loss to Boise State's Sam Sippel.
Columbia was also dominant on the doubles side, securing wins in all four matches. Teams of Alex Kotzen and Nicolas Kotzen, Palta and Ruger, Westphal and Zheng, and Horvat and
Winegar cruised to wins over the Broncos.
Day 2 – Jan. 15
Columbia competed against North Carolina on the second day of the event. The Lions again were dominant in singles, winning five of the seven matches. Zheng, Alex Kotzen, Nicolas Kotzen, Horvat, and Westphal picked up wins in singles action.
On the doubles side, the Lions took two out of five matches from the Tar Heels. Westphal and Horvat, and Alex Kotzen and Ravichander earned the two doubles wins of the day for the Lions.
Day 3 – Jan. 16
On the final day of the Allen Morris Invitational, Columbia competed in singles and doubles against Boise State and Tulsa. The Lions split singles play against the Broncos as Ruger and Winegar picked up wins. Hashimoto and Palta fell in their singles matches.
The Lions won six of eight doubles matches against Tulsa on Monday to wrap up the event. Winegar and Zheng, Alex Kotzen and Horvat, Westphal and Winegar, Hashimoto and Palta, Palta and Zheng, and Ruger and Alex Kotzen teamed up to earn the six doubles wins.

The Lions will head back to Chapel Hill for the ITA Kickoff Classic starting on Jan. 28. No. 22 Columbia will play a pair of dual matches starting with No. 16 Harvard. Columbia will then face either North Carolina or Oklahoma State on Jan. 29.
