ORLANDO, Fla. — Anne Cebula '20BC won gold in women's epee and Jackie Dubrovich picked up bronze in women's foil to highlight a great showing from Columbia fencing at the 2023 North American Cup, held from October 26-29 in Orlando, Florida. Senior captain Vera Kong highlighted the current members of the program with an eighth-place finish in sabre.
In total, the Lions posted 19 top-32 finishes and 32 total competitors from fencers either currently on the roster, alumni and two that are taking the 2023-24 academic year off to train for the Paris Olympics this summer.
Cebula posted a 6-0 mark in the preliminary rounds to earn a bye into the round of 64 in the knockout stage. She rolled to six more victories to earn her place on top of the podium after a 13-12 decision over Margherita Guzzi Vincent. In foil, Dubrovich went 5-1 in the opening bouts and reached the semifinals before falling in the semifinals.
Also in foil, Zander Rhodes took fifth after reaching the quarterfinals. Kong's run featured five victories in the knockouts before falling in the round of eight. Columbia also saw three top-10 finishers in men's foil, including alumni, James Bourtis '22CC (eighth) and Sidarth Kumbla '22CC (10th) and first-year Samarth Kumbla (ninth).
The Lions will begin the collegiate season this weekend at the Western Invitational, hosted by Air Force. The two-day event will be held from November 4-5 and features some of the top programs in the nation in the head-to-head dual matches.
