Lions earn second-highest national finish in team history
PHILADELPHIA — Columbia earned a sixth-place national finish at the College Squash Association (CSA) Women's Team National Championships. The three-day tournament wrapped up Sunday on the campus of Penn.
Columbia's sixth-place finish, and consequential final ranking, is two spots better than last season and its best since finishing fifth in 2020. The Lions were the No. 7 seed entering this year's tournament. They fell to No. 2 Harvard in the quarterfinals on Friday but bounced back to defeat No. 6 Cornell, 5-4, in the consolation semifinals on Saturday. That set up Sunday's fifth-place match against No. 4 Drexel, which the Dragons edged out, 5-4.
As they have all season, Farida Mohamed (1) and Simmi Chan (2) led the way for the Lions. The First Team All-Ivy League duo won their matches, capping off a combined perfect 6-0 individual performance at the team championships.
Columbia also got victories from Nourin Khalifa (4) and Sarah Cao (5). Each Lion took her match in four games and each of them posted individual records of 2-1 at the championships.
Drexel clinched Sunday's fifth-place match in a dramatic finish at No. 9. Ciara Richards held off Ellie McVeigh in five games, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 7-11, 11-1.
The women's squash team now prepares for the CSA Individual National Championships, which takes place in two weeks, March 3-5, right back on the campus of Penn in Philadelphia. Draws will be announced in the week leading up to the tournament.
