Wrestling Wraps Up Season At NCAA Championships

Columbia finishes a historical 2022-23 season at the NCAA Championships.
TULSA, Okla. – A historical wrestling season came to an end Friday afternoon on the second day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships as the remaining five Lions in the field were eliminated.
Nick Babin (125), Angelo Rini (133), Matt Kazimir (141), Joshua Ogunsanya (165) and Lennox Wolak (174) entered the second day of the championships in the consolation brackets of their divisions. Rini, Ogunsanya and Wolak all lost in the second round of consolation. Babin and Kazimir advanced to the third round of consolation before they both lost and were eliminated.
Babin finished the championships by scoring three team points through two wins. Babin got Friday started with by pinning North Carolina's Jack Wagner in the second round of the 125 consolation bracket. He then lost via major decision to Cornell's Brett Ungar in the third round as he was eliminated.
Kazimir easily advanced to third round of the 141 consolation bracket via medical forfeit by his opponent, Jakob Bergeland (Minnesota). Bergeland didn't weigh in Friday, so Kazimir met Lehigh's Malyke Hines in the third round. This was the third meeting between the two this season as Kazimir won the past two meetings in a dual meet and at the EIWA Championships. Hines prevailed in the third attempt as he defeated Kazimir via fall (3:56) to eliminate Kazimir.
Rini dropped an 11-3 major decision to Iowa State's Zach Redding in the 133 consolation round two matchup Friday. Ogunsanya was defeated by Virginia's Justin McCoy in a 7-3 decision in the second round of the 165 consolation bracket. Wolak lost via major decision to Ohio State's Ethan Smith in the second round of the 174 consolation bracket.
As a team, the Lions finished with 7.5 points at the NCAA Championships. Babin and Kazimir each contributed three points. Rini, Ogunsanya and Wolak all scored 0.5 points for the team.
Columbia ends the 2023 season with one of the best postseason performances in program history. The Lions sent a program record six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships after scoring the most points in program history at the EIWA Championships. Eight Lions placed at the EIWA Championships and five earned auto bids to the NCAA Championships. Columbia finished tied for fourth as a team at the EIWA Championships, notching its best finish since the 2014-15 season and its seventh top five finish in school history.
