
Five Lions Punch Ticket to Semifinals After First Day of EIWA Championships

Columbia sits in fourth place as a team after day one.
PHILADELPHIA – Angelo Rini (133), Matt Kazimir (141), Danny Fongaro (149), Joshua Ogunsanya (165), and Lennox Wolak (174) all advanced through the first two rounds of their bracket to secure a spot in the semi-finals on Sunday at the EIWA Championships.
The Lions sit it fourth place as a team after day one with 66.5 total points. They sit behind Cornell (82.5), Lehigh (68.5), and Penn (67) in the team standings.
Rini got the day started with a 15-6 major decision win over Harvard's Dante Frinzi. He then followed that up with a 5-3 decision win against Kurtis Phipps (Bucknell).
The defending EIWA Champion at 141 pounds, Kazimir faced Long Island University's Devin Matthews in the Round of 16, where he posted a 3-0 decision win. Kazimir earned an 8-4 decision win the quarterfinals over Lehigh's Malyke Hines in a rematch from the dual earlier this season where Kazimir was also victorious.
Fongaro had an exciting start to the day as he won by fall over Brown's Blake Saito (6:53) in the round of 16 at 149. He followed that up with an intense 4-3 decision win over Lehigh's Max Brignola in the quarterfinals. Fongaro was able to win the rematch after losing a 3-1 decision to Brignola earlier this season.
Ogunsanya continued to impress as he started the afternoon with a 13-2 major decision over Sacred Heart's Aidan Zarrella. He faced Lucas Revano (Penn) in the second round for the second time this season. Ogunsanya earned a 6-5 decision win to make it back-to-back wins over Revano this season.
Wolak came out strong and took a 22-9 major decision against Noah Fox (Franklin and Marshall) in the round of 16 at 174. Tied, 4-4 with under a minute left in the quarterfinal match against Mikey O'Malley (Drexel), Wolak secured a huge takedown to win the match and punch his ticket to the semi-finals.
Nick Babin (125), Aaron Ayzerov (184), and Jack Wehmeyer (197) had strong showing on the first day of the EIWA Championships and are still in consideration in the consolation brackets. All three will resume action tomorrow morning.
Babin posted a 7-0 decision win in the Round of 16 over Hofstra's Jacob Moon. He then dropped a 4-1 decision to Diego Sotelo (Harvard) in the quarterfinals. Babin moved over to the 125 consolation bracket and posted a 14-4 major decision over Drexel's Antonio Mininno to advance to the next round.
Like Babin, Ayzerov also got the day started with a win in the Round of 16. He took a 10-1 major decision over Harvard's Leo Tarantino, avenging the loss to Tarantino last month. Ayzerov moved on to the quarterfinals where he fell in a 4-2 decision to Jacob Nolan (Binghamton). Ayzerov rebounded in a great way as he won by fall (2:36) over Bucknell's Mason McCready in the 184 consolation bracket.
Wehmeyer continued to show improvement late in the season as he opened the Round of 16 with a win by fall (2:16) over Penn's Cole Urbas. Wehmeyer won the rematch after dropping a 4-2 decision to Urbas earlier this season in the dual match. Wehmeyer lost in the quarterfinals to Luke Stout (Princeton) via decision, 6-1. He then rebounded with a 14-3 major decision over American's Connor Bourne to stay alive in the consolation bracket.
Cesar Alvan (157) and Billy McChesney (285) were eliminated from the bracket after losing two matches today. Alvan defeated Conner Decker (Binghamton) in a 9-2 decision in the Round of 16 before losing a decision to Trevor Tarsi (Harvard) and a major decision to Tyler Williams (Drexel). McChesney lost by fall (1:06) to Nathan Taylor (Lehigh) and lost a 4-2 decision to Austin Kohlhofer (Army).
