
Zheng Named ITA Regional Rookie of the Year

National awards will be announced June 12
NEW YORK – Columbia men's tennis first-year Michael Zheng was named the 2023 ITA Northeast Region Rookie of the Year as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday.
The Montville, New Jersey native finished the spring season with a 20-6 overall record as he advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championships. By advancing to the round of 16, Zheng became the first Lion to earn All-American honors as a first-year.
Zheng adds Northeast Region Rookie of the Year honors to a lengthy list of awards this season that includes being named the Ivy League Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Ivy in singles and doubles. He is the first player in Ivy League history to win all four awards in one season.
Zheng ended the season ranked No. 35 in singles by the ITA. He achieved his highest ranking of No. 8 in the singles rankings in February.
Every year the ITA recognizes coaches and players for their excellence on the court and in their communities throughout the season. The national award winners will be announced next Monday, June 12.
