“The Nation’s Oldest Program” will host six home matches
NEW YORK – The 2023-24 Columbia wrestling slate will again feature duals and tournaments against the top talent in the country. Six home contests highlight the schedule, including duals against Michigan and Ohio State, who both finished in the top 15 of Intermat's final dual rankings last season.
"The Columbia wrestling program is committed to competing against the best teams in the country on a yearly basis," Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Zach Tanelli said. "We have a great team returning with a lot of experience. Every event on this schedule will serve as preparation for us to peak in the postseason and have multiple All-Americans. It is going to be hard, which is what we are looking forward to most."
The Lions will open the season at the Clarion Open on November 5 in Clarion, Pennsylvania. The team will then return to New York for an exciting pair of matches to open the home slate. The Lions will face Michigan at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 17 before meeting Ohio State for a noon match on Sunday, November 19 at Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
Columbia will hit the road for the month of December starting with the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite on December 1 and 2. The Lions will then make a trip to Iowa for matches at Northern Iowa (Dec. 8) and Iowa (Dec. 10). Columbia will make a return trip to the hawkeye state for the Soldier Salute event on Dec. 29 and 30.
Coming out of the Christmas break, Columbia will travel to Atlantic City, New Jersey to meet West Virginia in the Battle of the Boardwalk event on January 7. The Lions will then hit the road to start EIWA and Ivy League action. Columbia will travel to Army on January 14, Princeton on January 26, Penn on January 28 and Cornell on February 2.
Following the road trip, the Lions return home for the final four matches of the regular season. Columbia will host Bucknell on February 4, Harvard on February 16, Brown on February 18 and American on February 25 to wrap up the regular season.
Bucknell will host the 2024 EIWA Championships from March 8-10 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The NCAA Championships will be held in Kansas City, Missouri from March 21-23.
Columbia is coming off a 6-7 overall performance during the 2022-23 season that saw a program record six wrestlers compete at the NCAA Championships. The Lions finished tied for fourth as a team at the 2023 EIWA Championships as the team scored the most points in program history at the event. Eight wrestlers placed at the EIWA Championships and five earned auto bids to the NCAA Championships.
