ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Columbia wrestlers
Richard Fedalen,
Dominic Rossetti and
Nick Fine secured bout victories in Sunday's dual against No. 9 Michigan. As a team, the Lions fell to the Wolverines, 28-9.
Columbia secured bout wins at 149 pounds, 157 pounds and 184 pounds for a strong performance against the ninth-ranked Michigan squad. Rossetti and Fine both capitalized in sudden victory to earn wins.
"Tonight was an example of athletes that wrestle through all positions will ultimately end up in scenarios to score points and win," Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling said. "
Nick Fine showed tremendous courage continuing on after getting dinged up and because of his competitive spirit, found a way to get his hand raised in OT. Unfortunately, we were on the losing end of some of these critical situations and we will correct these mistakes and continue to make progress."
Fedalen posted Columbia's first bout victory of the dual with an impressive 6-1 decision over Michigan's Eleazer Walker at 149 pounds. Fedalen used a late takedown in the first period to secure a lead that he was able to build on to finish off the win. The win helped Fedalen finish the weekend 2-0 after defeating Cleveland State's Connor Saylor on Friday.
Rossetti stepped up following Fedalen's win for the 157 bout. Rossetti secured a takedown to hold a 3-1 lead after one period against Zack Mattin. Mattin was able to bounce back and force overtime with a point on a technical violation in the second period and an escape in the third period. Following a long scramble in overtime, Rossetti was able to get a takedown and two near-fall points to take an 8-3 win in sudden victory. Rossetti's win helped cut the Michigan lead in half, 12-6, heading into the break after five outs.
Fine secured an upset win in sudden victory against 15
th-ranked Jaden Bullock in the 184 bout. Fine and Bullock battled through the first period with no score after an extended scramble that saw Bullock fight out of two deep positions. Fine rode out the third period, accumulating 1:32 of riding time to force overtime tied, 2-2. Following injury time for Bullock in sudden victory, Fine chose bottom and got an escape to seal a 3-2 upset win over Bullock. With the win, Fine joins Fedalen as the only other Lion to finish the weekend 2-0.
Michigan built up a 12-0 lead to start the dual with major decision wins in the 125, 133 and 141 bouts. Coming out of the break, the Wolverines won four of the final five bouts to finish off the 28-9 victory.
