Fine went 2-0 last weekend with an upset win in the Michigan dual
PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia junior Nick Fine was named the Ivy League Wrestler of the Week Tuesday after finishing the weekend 2-0 with bout wins in Columbia's dual matches against Cleveland State and No. 9 Michigan.
Fine started the weekend with a 10-1 major decision win against Cleveland State's JR Reed as Columbia cruised to a 27-15 win in the dual against Cleveland State. Fine secured his second victory of the weekend on Sunday with an upset in sudden victory over Michigan's 15th-ranked Jaden Bullock.
"Nick is extremely competitive and fights for every point in training and during competition," Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Donny Pritzlaff said. "This weekend he was a great example of finding a way to win positions and matches even when you are in a compromised situation. That never give up mentality has served him well and we are excited for Nick's future!"
Fine secured the upset win in sudden victory against 15th-ranked Jaden Bullock in the 184 bout of the Michigan dual. Fine and Bullock battled through the first period with no score after an extended scramble that saw Bullock fight out of two deep positions. Fine rode out the third period, accumulating 1:32 of riding time to force overtime tied, 2-2. Following injury time for Bullock in sudden victory, Fine chose bottom and got an escape to seal a 3-2 upset win over Bullock. With the win, Fine joins Richard Fedalen as the only other Lion to finish the weekend 2-0.
Fine is the second Columbia wrestler to garner Ivy League Wrester of the Week honors this season. Cesar Alvan won the award to start the season.
