Lions own longest winning streak in the country at 8-0; Continue best start in 55 years
NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball earned another dominant win on Monday night to stay perfect this season, dismantling New Hampshire, 83-57, inside Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
The Lions (8-0) have the most wins and the longest active winning streak in the country. Columbia has won its first five home games to start a season for the first time since 2010. The Lions benefited from a well-balanced attack on Monday, getting double-figures scoring from four and tallying 25 assists.
Kenny Noland poured in a game-high 17 points. Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa recorded 14 points and four assists. Avery Brown notched 10 points, five assists, and four steals. Jake Tavroff recorded a career-high five assists in the win. First-year Mason Ritter led with eight rebounds. Columbia had a strong rebounding performance, picking up 40 against the Wildcats.
"The guys are starting to develop a real chemistry," head coach Jim Engles said postgame on ESPN+. "With the opportunity these guys have had to play together they're starting to get a feel for what they do well."
Brown and Noland combined for 18 of Columbia's first 26 points. Columbia jumped out to a 19-point lead with only 6:49 left in the first half but ultimately went into halftime with a 45-31 lead.
"It's extremely fun," Noland added postgame. "Everyone's sharing the ball, everyone's getting a touch. Everyone's happy so if we can just keep that going we're going to be in a good spot."
New Hampshire quickly narrowed it down to an eight-point lead in the second half before Blair Thompson threw down a dunk that sparked a 17-2 run. After a silent first half, Rubio De La Rosa knocked down a three while being fouled and finished the four-point play. Columbia was suddenly up 23, expanding its lead up to as much as 35 with 5:34 to go.
The Lions have over a week before they hit the road to play UAlbany next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
