INDIANAPOLIS — Columbia men's basketball's Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa has been named an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games of the week ending Nov. 24, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced on Tuesday.
Rubio De La Rosa averaged 29 points per game last week, shooting 73.1 percent (19-of-26) from the field, 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from three-point range and 90 percent (9-of-10) at the charity stripe.
The Santiago, Dominican Republic native dropped a career-high 37 points against Stony Brook last Saturday, shooting 9-of-13 from beyond the arc, setting a Levien Gym record for three-pointers, and tying the record for points scored. He then recorded a team-high 21 points along with three assists, three steals, and a block in Columbia's win over LIU last Wednesday. His only missed field goal attempts last week came from three-point range.
Rubio De La Rosa was also named Ivy League Player of the Week, ESPN Dick Vitale National Player of the Week, and CollegeInsider.com Lou Henson National Player of the Week on Monday. Columbia is 8-0 for the first time since 1969 and currently holds the longest winning streak in the nation.
For the 2024-25 season, the USBWA continues its national player of the week program that has been affiliated with the Oscar Robertson Trophy since the 2009-10 season. Prior to last season, the USBWA had recognized just one player each week.
Each Tuesday during the regular season, designated USBWA board members will select five standouts from the 31 Division I conference players of the week to be recognized. This week's selections were chosen from a list of the conferences that named a player of the week on Monday.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 800 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season. For more information on the USBWA and the Oscar Robertson Trophy, contact executive director Malcolm Moran at 814-574-1485.
