Columbia wins nine of 10 bouts in the dual victory
NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling team posted wins in nine of 10 bouts to earn a 39-3 dual win over American on Sunday afternoon inside Levien Gymnasium.
With the regular season complete, Columbia turns its focus to the EIWA Championships. The Lions will begin competition in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania starting Friday, March 8 and ending Saturday, March 9.
"I think our coaches do a great job of scheduling our training and our matches so we're peaking at the right time in the season," senior Nick Babin said. "I think it's definitely showing in our results with a few good team wins. Now our focus is on to the most important part of the season, which is our conference tournament and national championships."
Nick Babin kicked off the dual with a win via fall over American's No. 28 Jack Maida. Maida held a lead in the third period before Babin used a takedown to put Maida in a vulnerable position. Babin finished off the fall at 6:03 to secure his seventh pin of the season.
"It's definitely special to do it on senior day," Babin said. "I just felt like I was in good shape and kept pushing and got the pin."
American secured its lone win of the dual match at 133 pounds as Maximilian Leete defeated Sulayman Bah in a tight, 8-6 decision.
Kai Owen stepped up next and dominated in a 17-2 tech fall victory against Cael McIntyre at 141. Richard Fedalen then battled to earn a 5-0 decision over Jack Nies. Dominic Rossetti put the Lions up, 17-3 at the halfway point of the dual with an 11-9 decision win against Ethan Szerencsits at 157.
Kyle Mosher, No. 15 Lennox Wolak, No. 26 Aaron Ayzerov, No. 27 Jack Wehmeyer and Vincent Mueller capped off the dual match with wins in the last five bouts.
Mosher continued to impress as he posted a 12-2 major decision win over Ryan Zimmerman. 15th-ranked Wolak secured the second tech fall of the match for the Lions with a 17-2 victory against Breon Phifer.
No. 26 Ayzerov notched the Lions' second pin of the day as he defeated Brad Kata in 2:34. No. 27 Wehmeyer took a 13-1 major decision against Liam Volk-Klos. Mueller closed out the match with a hard-fought, 9-7 decision win over No. 33 Will Jarrell.
