The Lions will make the short trip to Long Island in search of NCAA Championship bids
NEW YORK — Columbia fencing will send the maximum 24 qualifiers (12 men, 12 women) to the NCAA Northeast Regionals, hosted by LIU in Brookville, New York, on Sunday, March 10. The Lions will face off against the region's best during the one-day event.
The competition will begin at 10 a.m. with pool play, followed by the knockout rounds in the afternoon.
The Columbia men and women are ranked No. 1 in both the United States Fencing Coaches Association's SPI metric and the final coaches poll of the season. Each team earned a share of the Ivy League Championship last month, and the men's team set a program record with 34 dual-match victories. The women also had a strong regular season, posting a 36-4 mark, one off the benchmark set last season. Both win totals were the highest in the country.
Individually, first-year Sam Kumbla is coming off winning the Ivy League Individual Foil Championship and is currently ranked the No. 1 junior foilist in the world. Six Lions who earned All-Ivy League honors are part of this weekend's roster, including Rachael Kim (women's foil), Skyler Liverant (men's epee), Tamar Gordon (women's sabre), Evelyn Cheng (women's foil) and Bogdan Hamilton (men's foil) and Jaden Callahan (men's sabre). Additionally, the Lions are also bringing back NCAA Regional veterans Vera Kong and Chloe Gouhin in women's sabre, Tierna Oxenreider in women's epee, Jackson McBride in men's sabre, Zach Binder in men's foil and Justin Haddad and Ethan Kushnerik in men's epee.
NCAA Northeast Regional competition helps determine the qualifying fencers for the NCAA Division I National Championship, which will take place at the Ohio State University from March 21-24. Columbia hopes to send 12 fencers to Columbus.
Only Columbia's top two fencers for each of the six weapons (six men's and six women's) can qualify for the National Championships. In the end, the qualifiers are determined by a formula based on 60 percent weight on regional bouts and 40 percent weight on regular season results. No qualifiers are official until the NCAA's announcement on Tuesday, March 12, when NCAA Championship selections are posted.
