Columbia earns its first Ivy League win of the season
NEW YORK – The 10th-ranked Columbia men's tennis team bounced back after last week's loss to Cornell with a 4-0 victory over No. 30 Princeton on Friday afternoon at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
The Lions improve to 15-3 overall this season with a 1-1 mark in Ivy League action.
Columbia pulled away down the stretch to claim the doubles point and take the early lead over Princeton to start Friday's match. The 16th-ranked duo of Theo Winegar and Michael Zheng worked a break that helped them take a lead and secure the 6-3 win over No. 31 Paul Inchauspe and Filippos Astreinidis in the top doubles.
Moments later, the No. 44 pair of Nicolas Kotzen and Max Westphal finished off a 6-4 win against Landon Ardila and Evan Wen in the No. 2 spot to clinch the doubles point for the Lions.
Alex Kotzen and Henry Ruger were deadlocked in a 5-5 match against Sebastian Sec and Alan Kam in the No. 3 doubles when the point was clinched, so their match was abandoned.
Nicolas Kotzen claimed the first singles victory of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Sec in the No. 3 spot. Ruger put Columbia ahead, 3-0 with a win over Wen in the No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Hugo Hashimoto clinched Columbia's 4-0 victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kam in the No. 5 singles.
