This year’s backdrop featured the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows
NEW YORK — Columbia Athletics released its most recent version of its "All-31 Sport" Photo today on its social media channels. The photograph, featuring student-athletes from every Columbia varsity team, was taken in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, with the iconic Unisphere serving as the backdrop.
The photograph, the eighth in a series that began in 2015, was taken by Michael F. McLaughlin and Mark Smith and was edited by Carlisle Stockton of Stockton Photo, Inc.
The Unisphere was commissioned as the theme symbol of the 1964 New York World's Fair, and is located next to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and Citi Field. The sphere represents the continents and major mountain ranges in relief, is encircled by three giant orbital rings that represent the tracks of early satellites and lights mark the world's capital cities. The Unisphere celebrated both the beginning of the space age and the fair's theme of "Peace Through Understanding."
"The All-31 Team Photo is a powerful reflection of who we are as Columbia Athletics," said Peter Pilling, Columbia's Campbell Family Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education. "Bringing together student-athletes from every program in an iconic New York City setting underscores the collective pride and distinctive experience that defines competing at Columbia. It's an experience that truly can happen 'ONLY HERE.''
"For the second consecutive year, we are grateful for the continued cooperation of the New York City Parks Department for ensuring that we could capture this iconic location in our All-31 Photo," adds Alex Oberweger, Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications. "In particular, we thank Michelle Young and Danny Miller from NYC Parks for helping arrange this collaboration."
Previous photographs in the series have featured Columbia's campus locations Low Library (2015) and Revson Plaza (2021), across the river from the New York skyline in Hoboken, New Jersey (2016), the crossroads of the world, Times Square (2018), Bethesda Terrace in Central Park (2022), Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center (2023) and Hunters Point Park in Long Island City (2024).
