Lions defeat Clarion; fall to Rider in the nightcap
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Columbia wrestling team earned a hard-fought split on Sunday at the Rider Tri-Meet hosted by Rider. The Lions opened the afternoon with a dominating 32-9 win over Clarion before falling to the Broncos 24-19 in the nightcap.
Columbia (2-3) got strong performances from Aaron Ayzerov and Vincent Mueller, who both went 2-0 on the day. The Lions also got strong contributions from KJ Monaco, Cesar Alvan, Nick Fine and Jack Wehmeyer, who all picked up wins in Columbia's victory over Clarion.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to two wins via decision at 125 and 133. Frezza got the Lions on the board with an impressive win over Scott Johnson, notching a 23-7 win via tech fall.
KJ Monaco kept the momentum in the Lions with his first dual win of the season, taking down Oliver Fairchild in a 6-3 decision.
After Clarion retook the lead at 157, the Lions turned the momentum back in their favor for good, winning the final five bouts. Alvan started the run with a 6-4 decision over Alejandro Herrera-Rondon. Nick Fine scored a 16-1 major decision over Patrick Cutchember. Aaron Ayzerov notched a win by fall. Jack Wehmeyer defeated Ethan Wiant via a 13-2 major decision, and Vincent Mueller finished the dual with a win via fall over John Meyers; it was his fourth pin of the season.
In the second dual of the day, Columbia once again fell behind early. Rider jumped out to a 6-0 advantage when 22nd-ranked Tyler Klinsky defeated Bah via a fall with 1:22 in the bout.
Columbia retook the lead thanks to wins by Gursoy and Frezza. Gursoy notched a win via an 18-3 tech fall, while Frezza won via a medical forfeit over No. 15 Elijah Griffin, giving Columbia an 11-6 lead in the dual.
Rider stormed back with wins at 149, 157, 165 and 174 - the final win an 11-6 decision in favor of Enrique Munguia over Fine gave the Broncos a 21-11 lead. Ayzerov brought the Lions back to within five, notching a win via a 15-0 tech fall over Giovanni Alejandro at 184.
The Broncos clinched the dual when No. 21 Brock Zurawski got the better of Wehmeyer when he chose the down position to open the third and got an escape to go up 2-1, where the score would remain.
Mueller closed out the day with a win, defeating Hogan Swenski via a 5-0 decision.
The Lions return to action after the new year when they take on LIU on January 3 in Brookville, N.Y. The dual meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
