Columbia drops its first match at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships
WACO, Texas – The sixth-ranked Columbia men's tennis team couldn't recover after dropping the doubles point as No. 11 Stanford posted a 4-1 win over the Lions in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday afternoon.
With Columbia and fourth-ranked Ohio State both falling in their first-round matches, the Lions will now be faced with a top 10 battle in the back draw on Saturday. Ohio State faltered against No. 21 UCF on Friday. Saturday's match will mark the fifth straight contest against a top 25 opponent to continue an extremely tough slate for the Lions.
Stanford posted victories in the one and three doubles matches to start the match with a 1-0 advantage as a team. The Stanford duo of Nicholas Godsick and Henry Von Der Schulenburg took a 6-3 win against No. 62 Hugo Hashimoto and Jayden Templeman in the No. 3 doubles. Max Basing and Kyle Kang clinched the doubles point for Stanford with a 6-3 victory over No. 45 Michael Zheng and Nicolas Kotzen in the top doubles.
Max Westphal secured Columbia's only singles victory of the match by defeating No. 119 Henry Von Der Schulenburg in the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-3.
