No. 8 Columbia Men’s Tennis Sweeps Binghamton in NCAA Opening Round

Nicolas Kotzen set the tone as advance to Saturday’s second round
NEW YORK – The No. 8 seed Columbia men's tennis team made quick work of Binghamton, defeating the Bearcats 4-0 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Friday at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
With the win, the Lions advance to Saturday's second round where they will host Clemson. The Tigers defeated Quinnipiac 4-0 in the morning session.
Columbia (18-4) set the tone early getting a pair of quick wins in the doubles play. The No. 41 ranked doubles pair of Michael Zheng and Nicolas Kotzen defeated the Bearcats' top doubles pair of William Morais Binnie and Ronin Lotlikar 6-1. Hugo Hashimoto and Jayden Templeman secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Andrew Fang and Filipe Costa.
With the Lions leading 1-0 heading to singles play, Kotzen quickly added a second point. The Lions' No. 2 singles player defeated Lotlikar in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 to put Columbia out front 2-0.
Zheng made it 3-0 in favor of Columbia with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Binnie. Hashimoto clinched the match for the Lions with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Andre Ajed. Max Westphal, Sachin Palta and Thanaphat Boosarawongse were all leading in their respective matches when the contest went final.
