NEW YORK – Columbia men's tennis had four athletes earn ITA Northeast Region honors as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday.
Each year, the ITA recognizes coaches and players for their excellence on the court and in their communities throughout the season. Senior
Hugo Hashimoto was named the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award.
Michael Zheng earned the Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship award, while
Thanaphat Boosarawongse was named the Rookie of the Year and
Max Westphal was named the Senior Player of the Year.
This is the second time Hashimoto has earned an ITA Regional award. Last season, he was named the Northeast Region ITA Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award recipient. The native of San Jose, Calif., finished his career 76-52 in singles play. He earned Second Team All-Ivy in singles play, putting up a career-best record of 26-11 in 2024-25. In the Lions historic postseason run, he went 3-1 in singles play to help Columbia advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Zheng continues to add accolades to his resume. The 2025 Ivy League Player of the Year and Academic All-American, and ITA All-American led the earned his 100
th career win in singles play this season, after finishing the year 37-5 in singles play. He became the first Ivy League player to be crowned an NCAA Individual Tennis Champion since Robert LeRoy claimed titles in 1904 and '06.
This marks the first individual award for Boosarawongse who finished his brilliant campaign going 17-10 in singles play. In Ivy League play he went 3-0 helping lead the Lions to a perfect 7-0 mark en route to the program's 18th Ivy League title.
Westphal was the emotional leader for the Lions in 2024-25. The native of Paris, France finished his senior campaign going 17-3 in singles play and was unbeaten to end the year. In the Postseason, he went 2-0 in singles play including a crucial 6-4, 6-2 win over NC State's Fons Van Sambeek to help the Lions advance to their second consecutive NCAA Quarterfinal.
All four athletes are eligible for the national awards which will be announced on Friday, June 13.
