Senior went 2-0 with two ranked wins last week
NEW YORK – Columbia wrestling senior Cesar Alvan has been named the Ivy League Wrestler of the Week. Alvan is coming off a 2-0 week, which included a pair of ranked wins and helped the Lions open Ivy League play 2-0.
The native of Ludlow, Mass., led the Lions to a 2-0 weekend with road wins over Princeton and No. 22 Penn to open Ivy League play. In the Lions' win over the Tigers, Columbia opened the bout with a 12-0 advantage, started by Alvan, who opened the dual with a 4-2 win over No. 16 Ty Whalen.
In the bout against Whalen, the two went into the third period tied 1-1. In the closing seconds of the bout, Whalen notched an escape to take a 2-1 lead before Alvan came up with a lake takedown to record the 4-2 win.
The next day, Alvan was the catalyst in the Lions' comeback road win over No. 22 Penn. With Columbia trailing 13-3, it was Alvan's 4-1 sudden victory win over No. 19 Sean Seefeldt with a 4-1 sudden victory decision.
As in the previous bout, Alvan and Seefeldt went to extra time, tied 1-1. In overtime, Alvan notched a three-point take down early to notch the 4-1 win.
The two wins give Alvan 20 on the year. For his career, he now boasts 76 career victories.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, January 31, at 7 p.m. when they battle No. 22 Cornell in Ithaca.
