Michael Zheng’s return to the lineup is not enough to help the Lions
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The return of back-to-back NCAA singles national champion Michael Zheng to the lineup was not enough to help the 12th-ranked Columbia men's tennis team, as the Lions fell 6-1 to No. 2 Virginia on Friday night at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Columbia (2-3) earned its lone point in singles, when Thanaphat Boosarawongse delivered a gritty three-set win at the No. 5 position. Boosarawongse outlasted Jangjun Kim, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, to give Columbia a spark against the Cavaliers. The match was one of three singles contests that went the distance for the Lions.
Virginia (5-0) secured the doubles point by winning at the top two spots. Columbia's pairing of Boosarawongse and Aditya Govila fought to a draw at No. 3 doubles as the match was clinched before completion.
In singles play, several Lions pushed Virginia deep. At No. 1, No. 52 Nicolas Kotzen won the opening set before No. 16 Dylan Dietrich rallied to take a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision. Abhishek Thorat also forced three sets at No. 4 but came up just short, while Sachin Palta, Aditya Govila and Andrew Kotzen each lost in straight sets.
Columbia will return to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. when the Lions take on North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
