Senior secured berth to ITA Conference Masters in November
NEW YORK — It was an all-Columbia final in the Ivy League Qualifier championship match on Monday afternoon at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center, with senior Gayathri Krishnan taking the title. With the win, Krishnan secures a bid to the ITA Conference Masters in Rome, Ga., later this month.
Krishnan won four consecutive matches, including a semifinal comeback against Yale's Erin Ha and a 6-1, 6-3 victory over teammate Emily Baek in Monday's final to secure the singles title.
Krishnan opened the tournament Friday with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Cornell's Athena Orzechowski in the Round of 32. She followed with a hard-fought Round of 16 win over Princeton's Lilian Liu, recovering from a 7-5 first-set loss to take the second set, 6-3, before winning 14-12 in the deciding 10-point tiebreaker.
In Saturday's quarterfinals, Krishnan continued her run, beating Penn's Lara Stojanovski 7-5, 6-4 to reach the semifinals.
Krishnan faced another challenge Sunday against Yale's Erin Ha. After dropping the opening set, 7-5, Krishnan responded with a 6-2 second set and closed out the match with a 6-3 third set to advance to the championship match.
In Monday's final, Krishnan controlled the contest, winning 6-1, 6-3 to claim the singles title and cap an undefeated run through four matches.
Baek's sensational run began with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Princeton's Maren Urata and defeated Yale's Angela Chen 7-6(3), 7-6(4), in the Round of 16. She then earned a three-set quarterfinal victory over Brown's Sari Woo, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, before advancing past Cornell's Dylan Gelber in the semifinals following Gelber's injury retirement.
Columbia also recorded singles wins from Elena Zhao, who defeated Brown's Anne Yang in a deciding 10-point tiebreaker before posting a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Cornell's Sage Loudon to reach the quarterfinals. Zhao's run ended Saturday against Ha, 6-4, 7-6(7).
In doubles, Kylie Nguyen and Zhao opened with an 8-1 victory over Princeton's Lilian Liu and Ana Nguyen before falling to Yale's Shyla Aggarwal and Ziye Liu, 8-3, in the quarterfinals.
Columbia returns to action on November 5 when Krishnan travels to Rome, Ga., for the ITA Masters Championships. Some Lions will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to participate in the ITA Sectional Championships the same weekend.
