
Fencing’s Samarth Kumbla Named Academic All-American

Kumbla garners second-team honors
GREENWOOD, Ind. – Columbia men's fencing junior Samarth Kumbla was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-American Second Team, as announced by the CSC on Wednesday.
Kumbla, a computer science major with a 3.71 GPA, was one of 45 student-athletes selected for the at-large teams. Kumbla was an instrumental part of the men's team's capturing second at the NCAA Championships this spring. At the NCAAs, he became the program's first NCAA champion since 2022 when he captured the individual title in the men's foil.
The San Jose, Calif., native, captured the Bronze at the NCAA Northeast Regional and took home Second Team All-Ivy League honors. For the year, he finished 30-14 in dual meets and was 8-4 in Ivy League round robins.
Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher to be considered for the award.
