NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Columbia football has promoted Pat Madden to full-time coach of the defensive secondary, named Scott Larkee defensive assistant, and changed several other coaches' responsibilities, head coach Bob Shoop announced.
Sean Ryan moves from running backs to quarterbacks coach, replacing John DeFilippo, who was named the New York Giants' offensive quality control coach earlier this month. Shawn West moves from defensive secondary coach to running backs, and Madden replaces West as defensive backs coach. Shoop will oversee the Lions' special teams in 2005.
Madden is in his fifth year with the Columbia staff. He was one of three Columbia coaches kept on from the previous coaching staff.
"It was important to me to reward loyalty, and Pat did a great job for me," said Shoop. "When we hired him, I had to figure out what was the best fit for our staff.
"Sean Ryan has great training for the quarterbacks spot," Shoop continued. "Shawn West had worked with me in the secondary and, for him to continue to grow and develop as a coach, I wanted to get him out from under my shadow to the offensive side of the ball, where he will provide a lot of energy and enthusiasm."
Larkee, a former All-Ivy linebacker at Harvard, moves into Madden's old position as defensive assistant. He returns to the Ivy League after nearly three full years as an assistant coach at Bates College, where he was linebacker coach, special teams coordinator and strength & conditioning coordinator.
"Scott has uncommon experience and is really a steal for our program," noted Shoop. "He is a smart guy and a real asset. He came highly recommended."
Prior to Bates, Larkee was outside linebacker coach at his alma mater, where he helped coach the Crimson to an undefeated Ivy season and the league title in 2001.
Larkee has also coached in France as the defensive coordinator for the Saint-Ouen-l'Aumone Cougars, and spent two seasons at Bowdoin College as linebacker coach.
The Wisconsin native also played for an Ivy champion squad at Harvard. A 1999 graduate with a degree in anthropology, Larkee earned second-team All-Ivy as a linebacker and finished as the third-leading tackler in school history.
