NEW YORK - Columbia University begins its 116th season this Saturday as the Lions face Fordham in the Liberty Cup at Jack Coffey Field in the Bronx at 7 p.m.
Third-year head coach Bob Shoop announced sophomore Craig Hormann (Indianapolis, Ind.) will be Columbia's starting quarterback. Hormann and senior co-captain Joe Winters had been neck-and-neck for the starting job since the conclusion of the 2004 season.
"It's tough because they are both great kids and we can win with both of them, but it was just the productivity throughout the course of our three scrimmages," Shoop said. "At this point we thought Craig was just a little ahead. I wish there was some way to play both quarterbacks at the same time."
Hormann completed 19 of 38 passes for 207 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in three appearances last fall as a first-year. Winters missed all of the 2004 season due to injury, but had played in four games as a sophomore in 2003.
For the fourth consecutive season, the Ivy League will appear on the YES Network. Columbia will be broadcast on YES in the Lions' game at Dartmouth Oct. 22 at noon. Additionally, Columbia football will appear on Sirius Satellite Radio for the first time, as Sirius will broadcast Columbia's game with Harvard Nov. 5.
Columbia's home games are played at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium at Baker Field, 218th Street and Broadway, New York, N.Y. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling 212-854-0043.
