NEW YORK - John Mulhern scored in the first minute of the match but Brown scored three unanswered goals after that point to capture a 3-1 decision in the Ivy League opener for both teams.
The match began at a frenetic pace, with Mulhern (Smithtown, N.Y.) taking a chip from Tom Smith (Brighton, England) over the defense and lofted it in the back of the net to put Columbia ahead 34 seconds into the match, in one of the quickest scores in Columbia history.
Brown halted the Columbia (3-7, 0-1 Ivy) momentum just five minutes later, with an unusual goal on a throw-in. Brown's Darren Howerton made a tumbling throw-in from about 30 yards out toward the goal and Ben Brackett got a head on it and flicked it in to tie the score at one.
In the 21st minute, Smith broke through the Brown defense, past Brown keeper David Semenza, received a ball from Mulhern along the left side and fired one destined for the lower right corner. A Brown defender trailing the play appeared out of nowhere and made a diving block of the shot. Smith collected the rebound and put a similar shot on net but Semenza, back in goal, smothered it to keep the match even.
The second half also began with an offensive outburst. This time it was Brown (5-3, 1-0 Ivy) who converted early, as Andrew Daniels snuck past the Lion defense, chipped one over Lion keeper Alex Maffeo (Morristown, N.J.) and gave Brown a 3-1 edge.
Senior Blake Lindberg (New Orleans, La.) made an excellent defensive save in the 55th minute, after Ian Premo got a head on a cross over the goalie. Lindberg stopped the shot headed for the corner and gave the offense a chance to come back.
The Lions kept the ball in the Brown zone for the rest of the match, but the Brown defense, which has allowed only eight goals in its previous seven matches, shut down those apparent opportunities and the match ended 3-1.
Columbia will return to action on Saturday, October 8, at home against Penn. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
