I'm often asked what a day in the life of a Columbia golfer looks like. Allow me a few minutes to share a typical week while playing for the Lions during the academic year.
Mondays
Probably like your local course or Club, we take this day off unless we're playing a tournament.
Tuesdays & Thursdays
They usually start with a workout from 7:45 am to 8:30 am. The guys will then visit one of the on-campus eateries and swipe their cards for a to-go meal before heading off to their first class.
We're fortunate to have priority class registration, allowing our student-athletes to schedule efficiently. Tuesdays and Thursdays are identical because we leave campus for one of our two home courses at 1:15 pm. A practice day can take on many forms, including practice and playing nine, 18 holes of qualifying in carts or practice only. Our practice plans depend heavily on where we are in the season and when the next tournament is.
Wednesdays
Typically, we remain on campus and utilize our indoor facility. This allows for flexibility in scheduling classes and practice. Our indoor facility is packed to the gills with state-of-the-art tech and available exclusively to men's and women's team members. Moreover, the facility is located right on campus, no more than a five-minute walk from any dorm. Please see our facilities page on our website.
Fridays
Columbia College students must take a foreign language for two years - unless you already fluently speak another language, than you will be exempt. In most cases, the class meets three times per week, with one class on Fridays. Those classes are 45 minutes long. On a weekend when we're playing a tournament, we'll leave Friday morning after that class, travel to the competition site, and play an 18-hole practice round.
Saturday/Sunday
Most tournaments will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. Sunday, after the tournament, we'll head back to campus. Monday will be a day off.
On weeks when we're not competing, we'll usually practice Friday and/or Saturday/Sunday so players get an additional day off to rest, recover, and catch up on any school work.
