Over the last several years, Columbia Men’s Golf has developed two extraordinary opportunities for its current student-athletes: The Genesis Invitational and a foreign tour of Scotland's best courses.
The Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase
February 13th-14th, 2022
The Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase provides an opportunity for a collegiate golfer to play their way into The Genesis Invitational, and simultaneously, help win a $50,000 donation to support their university's golf program. The pro-am style event pairs a college golfer, with two of his institution's alumni, and PGA Tour pro to form a team. The team's professional and amateurs play a best-ball round against other teams. The low team earns a $50,000 donation back to the school's golf program. Additionally, the low collegiate golfer will receive an exemption into the 2021 Genesis Invitational and will round out the field of 120 players.
"This is an amazing opportunity for our school and our players. It's also a unique and exciting way to engage our alumni and friends of the program," Mueller said. "To say that we now can offer our players a direct pathway to playing in a PGA Tour event is a huge deal. And, thanks to the generous support from our alumni, we couldn't be prouder that Columbia will be the first Ivy League school to participate in this event," Mueller commented.
Foreign Tour – Scotland, August 2022
Once every four years the National Collegiate Athletic Association and Council of Ivy Group Presidents allow teams to travel abroad for a foreign tour. This unique opportunity is meant to enhance a student-athlete's experience during their collegiate career by exposing them to an experience that creates a life-long memory.
Columbia was able to take advantage of this program after former Lion golfer, Julian Geiger CC ’67 was reminiscing with classmates about his experience as a student-athlete during the 2009 Alumni Outing. Mr. Geiger recounted his experiences as a Lion and how the lessons he learned on and off the field enhanced his life well beyond graduation. Julian, inspired to recreate these same lessons for the current players, founded the inaugural foreign tour and The Geiger Trophy tournament. Named in honor of his father, Howard W. Geiger, the Geiger Trophy was established to commemorate Howard’s generous and extensive efforts on behalf of the University during his tenure as Chairman of the Parent’s Committee of the Columbia College Fund from 1963-1967.
Since its inception in the early 1930’s, Columbia golf has been more than scoring averages, individual accolades or finishes in the Ivy League Championship. It is the field in which men build their character, develop their virtues, come to know themselves, and dare to achieve at least some small experience of greatness. It is therefore a natural progression in thought to yearn for the “Birthplace of Golf” where these aspirations became synonymous with golf. This is precisely why the inaugural foreign tour was held in Scotland; no stage could better suit these two firsts.
Courses have included: The Old Course, Carnoustie, KingsBarns, Prestwick, Western Gailes, Royal Troon, Crail, The Dukes Course, North Berwick, Turnberry.
