Former Columbia men’s tennis player Shawn Hadavi ‘17CC rejoined the Lions as an assistant coach in January 2024. He joins staff after playing professionally on the ATP Tour.
Hadavi joined the Columbia coaching staff at the start of the 2024 campaign that ended up being the best season in program history. The Lions earned 13 wins over opponents ranked in the ITA Top 75 throughout the season, including a 4-3 thrilling home victory over then No. 13 Harvard that helped Columbia secure its 17th conference championship. The Lions kicked off postseason play with wins over Quinnipiac and Michigan. Columbia then clawed past No. 9 Arizona, 4-3, in the NCAA Sweet 16 match at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. The Lions battled to the end in Stillwater, Oklahoma, but came up just short to No. 1 Ohio State. Columbia peaked at No. 4 in the ITA Rankings on February 20, 2024, which is the best ranking in program history. The Lions finished the season ranked No. 8 with a 23-4 overall record, marking the best final ranking in program history.
Following the NCAA Team Championships, Michael Zheng competed in the NCAA Singles Championships, while Zheng and Theo Winegar competed in the NCAA Doubles Championships. Zheng continued an already historic season as he made a run to the NCAA Singles Championship match, finishing as the 2024 runner-up. Zheng also earned singles All-American honors for the second season in a row. Zheng was named the ITA National Player to Watch following the conclusion of the season.
Hadavi played a role in helping Columbia garner two First Team All-Ivy selections and four Second Team All-Ivy selections in 2024. Columbia earned the top ranking in the ITA’s final Mid-Major and Northeast Rankings.
Hadavi had a decorated career as an athlete at Columbia, graduating as a four-time Ivy League Champion. He earned First Team All-Ivy League recognition in singles and doubles as a senior, posting 28-12 singles record with a 25-10 mark in doubles. Hadavi was also recognized as the ITA Senior Player of the Year from the Northeast Region. He went on to earn the region’s Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportmanship Award.
As a junior, Hadavi was named the Ivy League Player of the Year. He was also named the ITA Northeast Region Player to Watch and he was a First Team All-Ivy singles selection. Hadavi went 23-15 overall in singles as a junior with a 20-11 mark in doubles action. Hadavi went on to compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in 2016.
Hadavi earned his Bachelor of Arts in financial economics from Columbia in 2017.
