Steve Merrill joined the Columbia University Athletics Communications staff in January 2023. He is the primary communications contact for the Columbia field hockey, men's basketball, and rowing programs.
Merrill joined Columbia after most recently servingย as a Media Relations Assistant at Wagner College. Heย was the primary contact for the Seahawksโ baseball, men's and women's golf, and men's and women's swimming & diving programs.

Before arriving on Grymes Hill, Merrill worked as a sportswriter for 247Sports and Scarlet Nation for two years, where he covered and composed articles on the Rutgers University menโs basketball andย football teams, along withย recruiting. Other responsibilities withย 247Sports and Scarlet Nation included conducting interviews with Rutgers Athletics alumni and doing feature stories.
Merrill earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kean University in communications with an emphasis in public relationsย while also minoring in sport & event Management. He was a sportswriter at The Tower, the Kean University student newspaper, where he covered all 16 varsity sports at the school from 2018-19. Merrill was quickly promoted to Sports Editor after a year, where he was directly responsible for writing, assigning, and editing stories and features until his graduation in 2021. While serving as Sports Editor,ย The Tower wasย named best overall college newspaper in New Jersey for 2019-20 by the New Jersey Collegiate Press Association (NJCPA). Theย award wasย a first for Kean.
