PRINCETON, N.J. -- Twenty men's lightweight crews completed the head-style Belly of the Carnegie on Saturday, November 12. Finishing eighth and 11th, Columbia's two boats appeared to row better than most.
But not according to their coach, Vaclav Kacir. He was clearly unhappy with the lightweight Lions' farewell until the spring.
"I am not so happy," he said. "Their performance did not meet our standards."
Divided into two even boats by Belly of the Carnegie rules requiring that the top two boats be divided so that they are equal in speed, Columbia's "A" eight finished eighth in 15:27.73 and the "B" eight was 11th in 15:45.49. The "A" boat defeated "A's" from Harvard, Delaware, Dartmouth, and Georgetown, while Columbia "B" downed "B" crews from Harvard, Delaware, and Georgetown.
What dismayed Kacir, however, was that Princeton finished ahead of the Lions, as did two boats each from Cornell, Yale and Navy. Cornell was the overall winner, in 14:56.18.
As an added disappointment, Columbia's women's and men's crews finished sixth in the Belly Bowl competition, which combines the results of all three squads. Columbia finished third, its best Belly Bowl compilation ever, in 2004.
