PHILADELPHIA -- You can't do it any better than the Columbia women's novice crew. Making their collegiate debut last Saturday, October 29, all the Lion women did is finish first -- in a field of 58!
Rowing in the Women's College Frosh/Novice race for eight-oared shells at the huge Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, Columbia topped all others with a time of 14:32.21. Princeton A was second, nearly eight seconds back, in 14:40.05. Trinity College was third in 14:58.02, with Princeton B next, in 15:01.72, and Penn fifth in 15:02.97.
Columbia's B boat was sixth, in 15:03.99, followed by St. Joseph's, Bucknell A, Bucknell B, Lehigh, Georgetown, and William and Mary, to round out the top 12.
Women's novice coach Shannon Moore had a wide smile. "This was a great opening race for the novice women," she said. "We looked strong and aggressive. This was a good way to start our fall season."
The Columbia novices will have one more opportunity to show their ability, on November 13 when they row in the Belly of the Carnegie at Princeton.
