Army Stuns Men's Basketball, 67-66

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Colin Harris hit a three-pointer, heavily covered and fading away to give Army a 67-66 win over Columbia in Levien Gymnasium. Army improved to 3-3, while the Lions dropped to 5-1.

The Lions led by as many as 11 in the first half, but Army took advantage of early Columbia foul trouble to chip away of the lead. Army went 4-of-6 from the line in the final two minutes of the first half to cut Columbia's lead to four, 35-31, at the break.

Harris led all scorers with 13 at the half. John Baumann led the Lions with seven points at the break.

Columbia led by 10 points at 12:57 and led by eight points on two occasions in the final seven minutes. Jarell Brown hit a jumper at 4:21 to cut the lead to three, but the Lions answered with a jumper by Ben Nwachukwu to push the lead back out to five with 3:47 left to play. Dan Borcherdt hit two free throws at 2:40 to cut the lead to three, and D.J. Jemibewon hit two from the line just seconds later to cut the lead to one, 62-61, with just over two minutes remaining.

Nwachukwu got fouled and made his pair of free throws to give the Lions a three-point lead with 1:45 on the clock, but Matt Bell hit one of two to cut the lead back down to two as he made one of two from the line just moments later.

With under a minute to play, Dan Borcherdt went to the line and made both to tie the game and on the next possession, Nwachukwu grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed shot by Justin Armstrong, and was fouled. Nwachukwu made both free throws to give the Lions the lead with 27 seconds remaining.

After an Army timeout, the Lions played outstanding defense and broke up the initial Army play, but Brocherdt passed to Harris with less than two seconds remaining, and Harris shot the ball fading away and heavily guarded to give Army the win.

The basket by Harris was the first by either team in the final 3:45 of the game. Army went 9-of-10 in the final 6:30 and Columbia went 6-of-6, all by Nwachukwu.

"We've got to learn to put teams away," said Columbia head coach Joe Jones. "We are not going to win every game by two points. We have to execute better."

Harris led all scorers with 22 points, while Columbia's Baumann totaled 17. We got in foul trouble early in both halves.

"You don't want to take anything away from Army," John Baumann said. "The guy made a great shot." The Lions return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Wagner for a 7 p.m. game.
