PRINCETON, N.J. - Scott Greenman and Kyle Koncz hit four consecutive free throws in the final 11 seconds of overtime to give Princeton a 68-64 win in Jadwin Gym.
With the game tied at 50-50 with 1:31 left in regulation, Mack Montgomery was fouled and proceeded to hit both free throws to give the Lions a two-point lead. Dalen Cuff stole the ball from Edwin Buffmire with 54 seconds on the clock and the Lions called timeout just over half court.
With 24 seconds on the clock, Ben Nwachukwu went up for a shot in the paint, but the ball was partially blocked and John Baumann came up with the offensive rebound. It was ruled that the shot did not hit the rim so the shot clock was not reset and the Lions committed a shot clock violation when play resumed.
Montgomery was called for a hand-check on the perimeter and Mike Strittmatter hit two free throws to tie the game. Montgomery connected with Nwachukwu with just eight seconds on the clock to put the Lions up two.
Montgomery was called for a foul with 0.8 seconds on the clock and Buffmire hit both to force overtime.
Alex Okafor hit an old fashioned three-point play to open overtime scoring and Princeton wouldn't trail again.
With Columbia trailing by two with 12 seconds remaining, Dragutin Kravic hit one of two free throws but the ball went out of bounds off a Princeton player to give Columbia possession. A technical foul was assessed to the Columbia bench, as a player called timeout when the Lions did not have any. Greenman hit both to push the lead out to four.
Baumann made a layup to cut the lead to two and Koncz was fouled to stop the clock and he hit both for the victory.
Greenman hit a layup with 10:52 remaining in the second period and that was the last field goal the Tigers scored until the overtime period.
Princeton out-shot Columbia 33-13 from the free throw line in the final two periods of the game Princeton was 15-of-18 in the second period and 10-of-13 in the overtime, 26-of-34 for the game.
The Lions went 10-of-13 in the second period and overtime combined and shot 20-of-23 for the game.
Columbia out-rebounded Princeton by 11 (32-21) and Princeton shot 44.7 percent from the floor to Columbia's 41.3.
Baumann led all scorers with 18 points and eight rebounds. K.J. Matsui finished with 16 points,while Nwachukwu totaled 10 points.
Columbia falls to 7-7, 0-1 Ivy, while Princeton is now 3-10, 1-0 Ivy.
The Lions return to action tomorrow when they travel to the Palestra for a 7 p.m. match with Penn.
