Columbia University Athletics Unveils Revised Athletics Logos and Wordmarks

NEW YORK - Columbia University Athletics has introduced a revised set of intercollegiate athletics logos, Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education, announced.

The revised marks will solidify consistency in branding for Columbia Athletics. The logo, which continues to feature the face of the Columbia Lion, now includes the word "Columbia" in the primary mark. Alternate versions of the mark feature the word "Athletics" or the name of specific individual teams.

"As we move forward with our sports marketing initiatives, it is important that our brand is consistent in the marketplace," Murphy notes. "We must take great care of our marks and intellectual property."

The logo redesign is product of the efforts of Murphy, Associate Athletics Director for Communications Alex Oberweger, Associate Athletics Director for Sports Marketing Barry Neuberger in collaboration with the Office of University Publications, under the direction of Sandy Kaufman.

The marks reconnect the lion image with Columbia University in the sports marketplace. In recent years, the primary Columbia Athletics mark featured the skyline of New York City, but did not reference the name of the University.

Says Oberweger: "Our identity is in the name Columbia, the Columbia Lion and the color Columbia Blue. These revised marks will allow us to be more easily identified in a crowded marketplace."

The lion head without the wording will continue to serve as a secondary logo for the program. Additionally, word marks have been developed for use without the lion image. A stylized block "C" will be used as a tertiary mark.
