The Columbia volleyball team lost to Havard in three games, 30-21, 30-20, 30-24 in Cambridge, Mass.
The Crimson came out on fire in game one and used solid hitting to move out to a 21-10 lead. Columbia cut into Harvard's 11-point lead with a 9-1 run late in the game to make it 28-21, but the Lions could not complete the rally in the 30-21 loss.
Columbia stayed close throughout game two, but the kills wouldn't fall, as the Crimson held on to a seven-point lead for most of the stanza. Once the lead was at nine, Columbia had three straight points to threaten a rally, but Harvard held off the run in the 30-20 win.
Harvard opened the third with nine straight points, as they took a 14-4 lead. The Lions' solid play at the net kept them in the game, as seven Columbia blocks cut into Harvard's 11-point lead into two. Columbia's run forced Harvard to take a timeout, and the Crimson hit back-to-back points out of the break to make it 26-22. Three consecutive kills by the Crimson sealed the match.
Cassie Ligh led the Lions with nine kills, while Ellie Thomas added 16 digs. Columbia got three solo blocks and 14 block assists, including four by first-year Katie Mitchell, in the loss.
The Lions return to action tomorrow, November 10, 2007, when they travel to Hanover to face the Big Green at 4 p.m.
