Lightweights Register A Win in Subin Cup Regatta

That was the gist of Columbia lightweight rowing coach Marc DeRose's thinking after his team, coming off a day of brilliant racing in the Geiger Cup Regatta at Cornell Saturday, won only one race in the Subin Cup Regatta at Dartmouth Sunday.
“I think it was a matter of fatigue,” DeRose said. “We were just a little tired after the long ride from Ithaca. We raced all day Saturday, but Dartmouth didn't race at all. Dartmouth raced well, but I don't think Dartmouth is that much better than we are.”
Although Columbia was unable to overtake the Big Green and lost by 4.1 seconds, DeRose was not displeased with his squad's competitiveness or their rowing. He felt that fatigue may have cost them those four seconds.
The Big Green used their victory to reclaim the Subin Cup, which Columbia won last year based on the two teams' finish in the Eastern Sprints, after the original race was canceled by weather.
Dartmouth also was victorious in the freshman eight and two fours races. Columbia's victory was an impressive one in the second varsity eights.
“Dartmouth got off to a good start,” DeRose recalled, “but we had a real strong push at 1000 meters to take the lead and go up by about five seats. Dartmouth closed the margin, picking up about two seats, until we made a massive move with 500 meters to go.
“We went up by open water, and held that margin. Colleen Leth gave us excellent coxing in the race.”
The Subin Cup concluded Columbia's regular season schedule. The Lions will next see action Sunday, May 13 in the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts.
